Fortinet Announces Secure Wireless LAN Strategy with Introduction of Thin Access Points

May 19th, 2010

FortiAP and FortiGate Appliances Provide High-performance, Cost-effective Platform for Wireless Networking and Integrated Security

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Mar 1, 2010 – Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT) – a leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions – today introduced a secure wireless LAN strategy with a new enterprise-class FortiAP™ thin access point (AP) product line. The FortiAP-210 and FortiAP-220, which support the latest IEEE 802.11n standards, are designed to provide wireless networking capabilities for mid-enterprise and service-provider customers with a total user-base or distributed networks of 250-5,000 users. The FortiAP line will work in conjunction with Fortinet’s FortiGate® multi-threat security appliances, acting as the thin access-point controller, to provide a single platform that combines high-performance wireless networking with the industry’s broadest integrated network protection. In addition, the FortiGate platform enables customers to have a highly scalable infrastructure with the ability to manage a few to several thousand access points within a wireless LAN.

Today, wireless LANs are as at risk, if not more so, than wired networks. In fact, some of the recent high-profile hacking cases have involved “drive-by” trolling of exposed wireless networks of retail establishments, resulting in the theft of thousands of consumer credit card accounts. In addition to mid-enterprise organizations and service providers, retail industry customers will find the FortiAP/FortiGate solution ideal for meeting PCI DSS Wireless Guidelines, which require the detection of rogue wireless access points and intrusion prevention.

Until now, there have been few options for organizations that want to protect both their wired and wireless LANs with the same network and application security solution. The new FortiAP thin access points, together with the FortiGate product line, enable an integrated threat management schema for wireless networks in the same way that Fortinet has been able to provide for wired networks. In fact, wireless traffic needs more protection because it is a shared medium, which provides greater opportunity for network risks such as data leakage, denial of service attacks or the overuse of bandwidth causing network performance degradation. The FortiAP/FortiGate architecture will tunnel all the wireless traffic back to the UTM engine to undergo intrusion prevention and cleansing, identity-aware policy, and Layer 7 application prioritization to achieve a high-performing, “fortified” wireless LAN infrastructure. In addition, FortiAP uses standards-based CAPWAP (Control and Provisioning of Wireless Access Points) protocol for connecting thin access points as compared to proprietary methods used by competitors.

“Fortinet’s entry into the wireless LAN market gives current customers a way to create converged wired and wireless networks with the same powerful protection under a familiar, simplified and cost-effective management platform with no additional controller investment,” said Michael Xie, CTO and founder, Fortinet. “New customers will be able to experience a high-performance, secure wireless LAN environment that offers the broadest protection of any consolidated security offering on the market. Overall, today’s FortiAP introduction is a key step in Fortinet’s growth strategy to extend our security reach into broader and deeper parts of the network.”

FortiAP Line-up/FortiGate Controllers
The FortiAP product line is the first manifestation of Fortinet’s broader secure enterprise class WLAN strategy. As the initial products in the FortiAP line, the single-radio/dual-band FortiAP-210 and the dual-radio/dual-band FortiAP-220 offer reliable coverage, consistent high performance, and competitive and high-value price points as compared to similar products in their class. The FortiAP line can be used to roll out wireless network access to employees, retail locations, warehouses, point of sale locations or hot spots for guest use.

Key benefits of the FortiAP line:

* Next-generation, fully 802.11n-compliant access point
* High throughput with dual concurrent radio: 300 Mbps-600Mbps
* Rich set of enterprise-class AP capability
* Ideal for dense office, campus, branch office and retail
* Dedicated radio for air monitor to protect against rogue APs for PCI compliance
* Internal design conceals antenna to reduce chance of vandalism
* Lower cost of deployment with integrated Power over Ethernet (POE)
* Highest value at competitive price

All FortiGate appliances from the FortiGate-60 Series on up will be able to act as controllers for the FortiAP, giving customers flexibility and scalability to choose from the broadest range of controllers offered by any single vendor. FortiGate appliances will also be able to act as a single point of management for both wired and wireless LANs. In addition to the existing broad security feature set offered on FortiGate devices, the FortiGate access point controllers will also include WLAN management and wireless IPS.

Each FortiGate platform is capable of delivering centralized management of all access points and devices. From a single console, customers can control network access, quickly and easily update policies, and help monitor regulatory compliance.

Availability
FortiAP thin access points will begin shipping in Q3. Existing customers with valid support agreements will be able to upgrade their FortiGate operating system to act as an enterprise WLAN controller at no additional charge.

Fortinet Introduces New Multi-threat Security Systems with the Industry’s Highest Performance Enterprise-Class Firewall

May 19th, 2010

New FortiGate Series Delivers Up to 120 Gbps Firewall Throughput, Breakthrough IPS Performance, and Application Security through its Modular Architecture

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 17, 2010 – Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT) – a leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions – today announced two new flagship multi-threat security appliances that consolidate best-in-class firewall and Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) performance with advanced application-based security protection that is purpose-built for large enterprises.

The new FortiGate-3950B appliance delivers up to 120 Gbps of low-latency firewall inspection performance to help secure the most demanding enterprise environments, including high-speed data centers and network perimeters. Fortinet also announced the FortiGate-3951B appliance, which incorporates internal storage and can scale up to 100 Gbps of firewall performance. Both appliances feature a modular form factor for performance-on-demand and integrate the industry’s broadest array of network and content security services to deliver complete content protection at a granular level. With today’s announcement, Fortinet continues to advance the state of security from simple firewall “permit/block” functionality to ultra high-performance threat identification and prevention, with the added benefit of policy enforcement down to the application level. This is made possible through the integration of content-aware security technologies into the firewall to identify threats within trusted communications.

Flexibility, Scalability, and Performance for Large Enterprises
The highly versatile FortiGate-3950B and FortiGate-3951B appliances can be deployed for a wide range of broad security services while also maintaining network performance, due to integrated WAN optimization and greatly enhanced firewall and IPS technologies. In addition to functioning as dedicated enterprise-class firewalls with tightly integrated IPS and complete application control and security, the FortiGate-3950B and FortiGate-3951B can also be deployed to include any combination of IPSec/SSL VPN, antivirus/anti-malware, web filtering, anti-spam, data loss prevention, and voice security services, all determined by the customer for maximum deployment flexibility.

“Enterprises, especially organizations with large and labyrinthine infrastructures, are rapidly evolving their network security beyond the binary ‘allow/deny’ model championed within standard firewall technologies,” said Charles Kolodgy, research vice president, Security Products, with IDC. “Due to increasingly complex threats and network connectivity requirements, sophisticated and granular multi-threat prevention that is capable of operating at wire speed is becoming an absolute necessity. That said, enterprise customers are growing weary of having to manage discrete security devices and technologies. That’s why consolidated solutions are becoming more important to enterprise customers who want to streamline security efforts without compromising the integrity of their strategic data center operations, network perimeters and organizational assets.”

The FortiGate-3950B and FortiGate-3951B security appliances offer unmatched levels of security, price/performance, and scalability for large enterprise customers. This is accomplished by consolidating the broad security services of the FortiOS 4.0 MR2 operating system, custom hardware including FortiASIC processors, and a modular architecture for future growth.

Industry’s Fastest Enterprise-Class Firewall and High-Performance IPS
The FortiGate-3950B and FortiGate-3951B are the first security appliances to use the new Fortinet Mezzanine Card (FMC) form factor that enable the groundbreaking performance and scalability of each appliance. The FMC-XD2 accelerated interface module features dual 10-GbE interfaces that dramatically increase firewall and IPSec VPN performance. Customers have the option of scaling performance one module at a time, which offers significant investment protection. Using a maximum of five FMC-XD2 accelerators in a FortiGate-3950B appliance will deliver up to 120 Gbps of blistering-fast hardware-accelerated firewall performance (while a maximum of four modules can be utilized in a FortiGate-3951B appliance to achieve up to 100 Gbps firewall throughput performance).

The FMC-XG2 security-processing module also features dual 10-GbE interfaces that are designed to increase intrusion prevention performance significantly. Multiple modules can be added to the FortiGate-3950 series to deliver over 10 Gbps of hardware-accelerated intrusion prevention performance. This scalability affords enterprise customers the flexibility of deploying the FortiGate-3950 series appliances at performance levels that can be easily customized to their specific operating environment requirements.

The FortiGate-3950 series come standard with 10-GbE, GbE, and 10/100/1000 link speed interfaces. In addition, the FortiGate-3951B appliance is equipped with local solid-state disk (SSD) storage facilities with additional capacity for future expansion. Each rack-mountable appliance is available in a 3-RU form factor that is designed to preserve valuable real estate.

“For the last decade, Fortinet has successfully anticipated the security needs of large enterprises as they race to defend their networks against ever-evolving threats,” said Michael Xie, founder, CTO and vice president of engineering with Fortinet. “The next-generation multi-threat security appliances we’re introducing today continue this tradition by delivering a highly-consolidated solution with groundbreaking security, performance, and scalability that is tailor made for enterprise customers.”

Availability
The FortiGate-3950B, FortiGate-3951B and FMC-XD2 products will begin shipping this quarter. The FMC-XG2 product will begin shipping in Q3.

Xirrus XN8 Wi-Fi Array Outperforms Traditional APs + Controller in Tolly Group Tests

First Test in Series Highlights User Density, Capacity, and Range Advantages of the Wi-Fi Array at a Device Level; Second Test at System Level in Q3’10 Will Expand to Full Scale Deployment

Thousand Oaks, California – April 27, 2010 – Xirrus®, the Wi-Fi “Power Play” that delivers the most coverage, bandwidth, and user density in the industry, announced today the results of the first in a series of Wi-Fi solution comparison tests conducted in association with The Tolly Group, a provider of third party validation of IT products and services. The results demonstrate the performance advantages of the fully distributed architecture of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Array in comparison with the centralized architectures of traditional thin APs coupled to controllers in the IT closet.

Xirrus commissioned The Tolly Group to conduct a series of tests comparing the Wi-Fi Array with the thin AP + controller products of a leading Wi-Fi solution vendor. The first test, conducted at a device-level, compared one 8-radio Xirrus XN8 Wi-Fi Array with four 2-radio thin APs + controller. The second test in the series, with results to be published in Q3′10, will be conducted at a system level comparing multiple Arrays with an equivalent number of thin AP radios in a real world deployment.

“A single Xirrus XN8 Array performed very well in tests conducted against 4 802.11n APs + controller,” said Kevin Tolly, Founder of The Tolly Group. “While both solutions contained the same number of radios – 8 in each case – the Wi-Fi Array exceeded the performance of the multiple thin AP solution in every performance category tested.”

Highlights of the test results include:

* User Density: 100 wireless laptops over AES-encrypted connections simultaneously logging into a Windows domain with a 23MB profile took 2 minutes 40 seconds for 1 XN8 vs. 2:56 for 4 traditional APs connected to a centralized controller
* Range: The Wi-Fi Array supported over twice the range of the traditional AP as measured by signal strength at a given distance in both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands
* Roaming: Roaming time for stations moving between 2 devices was less on the Array than traditional APs in both Open and AES-encrypted scenarios
* Backbone Traffic: The Array placed one-half the traffic on the network backbone as did the traditional APs for the same test due to the distributed architecture of the Array (see graphics)
* Functionality: Feature/function tests executed against both the Array and AP solution showed effective functional equivalence for the two solutions

Figure 1: (Source: Tolly, April 2010) Backbone traffic from 4 traditional APs + controller (in green) and server traffic (in blue) for a 100 laptop domain login with 23MB profile. Since traffic must pass in and back out of the controller, there is 2X the traffic on the backbone network in a centralized architecture.

Figure 2: (Source: Tolly, April 2010) Backbone traffic from 1 XN8 Array (in green) and server traffic (in blue) for a 100 laptop domain login with 23MB profile. In this case, the traffic on the backbone is equal to the server for a distributed architecture and half that of the centralized traditional AP + controller.

“Xirrus’ fully distributed, dense radio architecture continues to be unique in the industry and is the leading solution for dense user and device environments. This was proven by the real world results obtained from the testing with The Tolly Group in the dense user scenarios we created that replicate conditions our customers face everyday around the world,” said Dirk Gates, CEO and founder of Xirrus. “In these tests, we answered important questions including ‘How long will it take to log my users into the network?’, ‘How will my network backbone be impacted by wireless traffic?’, and ‘How large an area will each Wi-Fi device cover?’. The economic advantages of the Xirrus solution over traditional offerings was evident from the significantly lower device counts and cables used to execute these tests while at the same time delivering superior performance.”

The second round of Wi-Fi solution testing with The Tolly Group, planned for Q3′10, will focus on system level testing using 64 radios of each solution deployed in a real world environment. The system tests will compare 8 XN8 Arrays to 32 dual-radio APs + controller and focus on the performance, encryption, and economics of the solutions. A key focus will be analyzing the linearity of investment as a wireless network scales in size. While the distributed design of the Xirrus Array scales linearly in performance and economics as more devices – and therefore more capacity – are added, the centralized design of the thin AP + controller solution exhibits a ’stair step’ effect in its growth as the performance capacity available per AP drops as the device limit of the controller is reached – whether that is 16, 32, 128, 512, or more APs.

The full XN8 Wi-Fi device report from The Tolly Group can be viewed on the Xirrus web site at: http://www.xirrus.com/tollycertified.php and on The Tolly Group’s site at: http://www.tolly.com/DocDetail.aspx?DocNumber=210121.
